UMass Clean Energy Extension Announces Offshore Wind Diversity Scholarship

The program will help students from diverse backgrounds overcome barriers to participation

December 14, 2021

The U.S. offshore wind industry is beginning a rapid rise to meet the next generation’s need for clean, secure, and affordable energy. As the domestic supply chain gains its footing, the urgent demand for a skilled workforce has created an opportunity to develop equitable, just, and accessible career paths to employment in offshore wind.

To help meet this growing workforce demand, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Clean Energy Extension (CEE) launched the Offshore Wind Professional Certificate in 2020. The online three-course, graduate-level certificate is tailored to meet the needs of: (1) professionals looking to re-specialize or transition from adjacent industries, and (2) current students looking to begin new careers in offshore wind. Certificate students and graduates have found employment with Avangrid Renewables, Equinor, Mayflower,Ventower, Vineyard Wind, Wood Thilsted, the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Utilities, and others.

CEE is now excited to announce the UMass Offshore Wind Career Access Scholarship Program, supported by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and developed in collaboration with the College of Natural Sciences, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and University Without Walls. The scholarship program is designed to enable students from diverse backgrounds to overcome financial and logistical barriers to participation in the offshore wind workforce. Scholarship recipients will receive:

  • Full tuition scholarships to the Offshore Wind Professional Certificate
  • Professional development support and mentoring
  • Priority hiring consideration for an internship at an offshore wind energy industry partner organization
  • A non-curriculum stipend to help address specific personal and professional barriers on an as-needed basis.

Scholarship applications for enrollment in the Spring 2022 semester course are due on December 27, 2021, though applications are accepted on a rolling basis for future semesters. More information and scholarship applications can be found at the CEE’s Offshore Wind Professional Certificate website.
