The role of the particle-particle interaction becomes increasingly important if the spectral band structure of a free system has increasing degeneracy. Ultimately, it will be the role of interactions to choose the state of the system. In the limit of infinite degeneracy, any weak perturbation can set a new energy scale describing the state with qualitatively different properties. I will discuss the general principles behind the universal properties of such quantum systems, including those of topological nature and those due to disorder. Finally, I will discuss the implications for ongoing experiments and propose new ones with degenerate-band quantum materials, systems with ultra-cold atoms, and circuit quantum electrodynamics simulators.
