Melishia I. Santiago comes from Springfield Public Schools where she worked with underrepresented high school students who were eager to pursue a STEM path in college. She is a low-income, first-generation college student who came to UMass Amherst to study biology as an undergraduate and graduate student. She completed her PhD in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University. Her research focused on ocean biogeochemistry and color satellite remote sensing imagery in the Bering and Chukchi seas (between Alaska and Siberia).
