Greenhouse Manager: Maura Brown '08
The College of Natural Sciences was fortunate to hire Maura Brown '08 as the Morrill Greenhouse Manager in 2014 when the management structure of the CNS greenhouse facilities was reorganized. With a lifelong passion for plants, Brown pursued a BA in plant and soil science from UMass Amhers; organic farming and greenhouse management have been her love and vocation.
Prior to her current position Brown was the greenhouse manager of a local garden store where she became acquainted with tropicals, ferns, succulents, cacti, and orchids in addition to the perennials, shrubs, trees, and alpines she was responsible for. During that time she was lucky enough to obtain more knowledge of orchids from the late and well-loved local expert Bill Hutchinson.
Brown can be reached by email at mlbrown [at] umass [dot] edu or by phone at (413) 545-0417 or (413) 824-0707.
Assistant Greenhouse Manager: Daniel Jones '13
With a BA in natural resources conservation from UMass Amherst, Dan Jones '13 has been working in the Morrill Greenhouses for many years. As an undergraduate he was hired as a weekend waterer and his curiosity and enthusiasm got him hired as weekday schedule as a student assistant. He was hired in his current position after he received his degree.
All of the CNS greenhouses are operated under the direction of Chris Joyner, CNS greenhouse superintendent, and a member of the CNS Dean’s Office Operations team. Michael Formosi, curator of the Durfee Conservatory, assists in an advisory capacity. Several part-time student workers who are trained by Brown and Jones assist with routine but essential tasks such as weekend/holiday watering and general clean-up.
