The College of Natural Sciences is home to more than 400 professors, 91 lecturers and 20 extension faculty committed to advancing the frontiers of research and to educating our students. Our award-winning and internationally recognized faculty excel at cutting-edge research, multidisciplinary and cross-departmental education and research initiatives, partnering with industry, and providing service and outreach at the local, state, and national levels.
Our world-class research informs our teaching and student mentoring, making possible the high-quality educational experience that is unique to a research-intensive university. The college has many award-winning teachers—an CNS faculty member has been awarded the UMass Amherst Distinguished Teaching Award in four out of the past five years. CNS faculty are dedicated to providing supportive research mentorships and undergraduate research opportunities, encouraging student-driven, inquiry-based laboratory and classroom experiences, and pioneering advances in instructional technology.
