Acknowledging Support from PHaSE in Presentations and Publications

The following information comes directly from a DOE memo to the EFRC's. It gives the formulae for acknowledging support from PHaSE. It is extremely important that you acknowledge support received from PHaSE in oral presentations, or posters/papers and related writing. It is also important that you keep records of such presentations, and report it as part of any requests from PHaSE for information on your work supported by the center.

For a paper or presentation to be counted as a “BES-EFRC funded” activity, it needs to acknowledge properly the source of the funding.  The Department of Energy is a large organization. In order for the research that we fund to be properly attributable to the Office of Basic Energy Sciences in general, and an EFRC specifically, that support needs to be explicitly called out.

For a presentation this is fairly straightforward and should simply be an acknowledgement on a slide, typically either at the beginning or end of the presentation.  At a minimum the acknowledgement should state that the work was supported “by the US Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences as part of Polymer-Based Materials for Harvesting Solar Energy, an Energy Frontier Research Center”. 

For a publication on work supported wholly under your EFRC, the acknowledgement should at a minimum state that “This material is based upon work supported as part of Polymer-Based Materials for Harvesting Solar Energy, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences under Award Number DE-SC0001087.”

When the work is only partially supported within the EFRC, it is important to state clearly which portion of the research was funded under the EFRC award and what portion of the work was supported by each other sponsor who is acknowledged.  This distinction could, for example, be made by using the above language but acknowledging who was supported by which sponsor (“E.R.J. was supported as part of…..”), or by indicating what aspect of the research (materials or processing used, or specific techniques) was supported by which sponsor (“neutron scattering studies were supported as part of….”).

Press releases or similar documents have different audiences and requirements, and therefore our guidance for attribution is slightly different.  For these please use the following: “This research was supported as part of Polymer-Based Materials for Harvesting Solar Energy, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science.”
