Interdisciplinary Programs
Developmental Disabilities and Human Services: This specialization provides the opportunity for undergraduate psychology majors to obtain the skills needed for employment directly supporting individuals with disabilities. It is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Intellectual Disabilities.
Environmental Science: The environmental science program offers a rigorous interdisciplinary understanding of the biological and physical sciences and their application to environmental problems.
Five College Astronomy Department: A collaborative program of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and UMass Amherst, this program links teaching and research programs at the five campuses and combines the small classes and individual attention found at small liberal arts colleges with the research opportunities and infrastructure of a large university.
Five College Coastal &, Marine Sciences Program: The program offers interdisciplinary curriculum and research opportunities in both natural and social sciences to undergraduate students enrolled in Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, or UMass Amherst.
HHMI Undergraduate Science: This program reforms the biological science curriculum by integrating the teaching of biology with physical and information sciences and provides authentic undergraduate Life Sciences research opportunities with an emphasis in genomics and bioinformatics.
Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Programs: The University offers specific pre-medical and pre-dental curricula that meet all requirements necessary for application to professional schools. However, most students select a regular departmental major, such as Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Psychology. All students are encouraged to use the academic and career advising services provided by the Pre-Medical Advisory Committee.
Pre-Veterinary Program: This major is primarily designed to provide pre-professional training to students planning to continue their education in veterinary, graduate or medical school, or who are contemplating joining the teaching profession.
