Steve Goodwin

Steve Goodwin joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology in 1986 and focused his research on environmental microbiology and the use of microbes to produce biodegradable polymers. Dr. Goodwin received a BS in Zoology from the University of Maine, an MS in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia, and a PhD in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin. From 2001, Dr. Goodwin served as Dean and as Associate Dean for the former College of Natural Resources and the Environment prior to becoming CNS dean in 2009. He is active on the boards of many regional organizations, including Community Involved in Supporting Agriculture (CISA), the Northeastern Regional Association of State Agricultural Experiment Station Directors, and the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute (PVLSI). Steve and his wife Gay are both originally natives of Beverly Mass.

Martha Baker

Martha Baker came to UMass Amherst as a faculty member in the Department of Consumer Studies. As Director of the CNS Advising Center, Dr. Baker provides services and guidance to undergraduates at each stage of their academic development, and works closely with students in academic jeopardy. Dr. Baker is originally from Longmeadow, Massachusetts. She received a BS from the University of Vermont, an MS from Purdue University and an EdD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She lives in Williamsburg with her husband.

John Lopes

John Lopes came to UMass Amherst in 2007 as the head of the Microbiology department. His research focuses on the transcriptional regulation of phospholipid biosynthesis in yeast and how phospholipid biosynthesis is coordinated with other biological processes. He has been continuously supported by the National Science Foundation and the American Cancer Society throughout his career. Dr. Lopes holds a PhD in biology from the University of South Carolina, he did postdoctoral research at Carnegie Mellon University, and his BA in zoology is from the University of Rhode Island.

Sally Powers

Sally Powers is a professor in the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department and a member of the Neuroscience and Behavior Program. She is a developmental psychopathologist whose research examines the interaction of neuroendocrine, social, and psychological factors in depression and anxiety disorders throughout the human lifespan. Dr. Powers served as the director of the UMass Center for Research on Families from 2003 – 2013. Prior to coming to UMass in 1988, she was Director of Family Research at the Laboratory of Developmental Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology, McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Senior Research Associate at Harvard’s Henry A. Murray Research Archive. She received her BA in psychology from Occidental College and EdD in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University.
